Extraction mix for The Penzance Convention

Damnsonic were recently invited to DJ at The Penzance Convention – an arts conference reflecting on the theme of extraction. It seemed logical to, if possible, try and put together a set which was somehow ‘on-theme’ and to take the opportunity to explore the diversity of explicit representations of extractive industries (including mining, hunting, agriculture) within recorded music from the past to the present day.

I prepared the following set and a little bit of spiel to put some of the tracks into context. However, when it came to playing we decided to present the tunes in a regular DJing – non-lecture-like – thing because attendees had essentially been lectured to, lecturing and conferencing all day. It seemed they clearly wanted to just let their hair down and have a little dance by the time 10pm rolled around.

The first official Damnsonic event sees the decay’d musical power-trio of Zapoppin’ Vs Gaskell rattle the rafters of Falmouth’s (*new venue*) The Fish Factory on 24th March. The show is to celebrate the Release of Mr Gaskell’s fantastic new record Kind Words From Home before they take to the road for a stint of UK tour dates (see below).

After the release of Zapoppin’s third album, Antiquarian Party Ballads For Dames, back in October 2010, our good friends over at Serious Types set about promoting the record and secured the band some summer dates in Switzerland - including one at the legendary week-long multi-town festival, Gwenstival.

This was, however, a little problematic. Shortly after Antiquarian…’s release, percussionist Sam Brettingham left the band and remaining members - not wanting to devolve - were forced to reorganise and change the instruments they were playing live. This resulted in Luke Richards moving from harmonium to drums (actually a small kit dubbed The Z-Kit) and Tom Sharpe swapping between banjo and harmonium - and the band wasted no time writing a brand new set.

Consequently, by March 2011, Zapoppin’ were keen to record something a little more up-to-date than the trio-orientated sound of Antiquarian… and with Julian Gaskell eager to capture the band in his DIY studio space, they met up one day intending to put down one or two tracks but ending up rattling through the best part of 12.

Gaskell mixed these tracks as if they were a complete album and the band recorded some extra vocals for one of the harmonium tunes (‘The Most Natural Thing in the World’) before mastering and ordering the songs in a way that seemed to casually lure the listener in (with pastoral opener ‘A Pearly Wotnot’ and the poppy anti-ballad ‘Flay the Night Away’) before taking them to an unrelentingly bleak and funereal end (‘In The Mud’). However, the final decision was made that rather than risk over-shadowing Antiquarian… with another album, the band would instead release the best of these songs on a bunch of promo singles to give out on tour (and online). And until now, the world has only known half the story.
